Royal Shrovetide Football: Thought to date back to the 12th century, this is a 'free for all' football game like no other, featuring the Up'ards (those born north of the Henmore river in Ashbourne) against the Down'ards (those born south of the river). The town closes for two days while the match is played.

Each day the ball is turned up' at Shawcroft car park at 2pm, and the game and celebrations carry on all day, usually until 10pm. Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales took part in the tradition in 2003.
