A talk by Steven Blake on Pittville after Pitt: debts, sales and 62 new houses 1842-1890
When Pitt died on February 9th 1842 at the age of 83, he left debts of at least £154,000. The talk will look at what happened next: the administration of the Estate by the Court of Chancery, the sale of the remaining building land at Pittville in 1843-5, the building of 62 new houses within the Estate between 1843 and 1886 and the sale of the Pump Room and gardens to Cheltenham Corporation in 1890.Dr Steven Blake FSA worked for 30 years at Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, eventually filling the post of Museum & Collections Manager, before taking early retirement in 2006. He is a former trustee, Chair, and now a Vice-President of the Holst Birthplace Trust and a member of the Pittville History Works group, in which his particular interest is in the building history of the Pittville Estate.
Tickets £12 for non-members, £10 for Friends of Pittville and Holst Birthplace Trust members available online and at the Holst Victorian House during opening hours (Thursday to Saturday during March, 10am-4pm).
