PASSCHENDAELE 100 - THE HIGH PEAK REMEMBERS Religious and Spiritual

This year, The Royal British Legion will mark the 100th Anniversary of the third Battle of Ypres – The Battle of Passchendaele.

The service, at St Matthews Church on Sunday 30th July at 6pm, will be conducted by the Revd. John Hudghton and High Peaks Mayor Cllr. Matthew Stone will be attending representing the High Peak along with council representatives from each of the towns and villages.
The 3rd Battle of Ypres, popularly known as the Battle of Passchendaele or the ‘Battle of Mud’, began on 31 July 1917 and raged through the next four months as summer turned to winter and the landscape of Flanders turned into a moonscape of shell holes filled with mud, muck and slime. Sadly too, it was the scene of over 325,000 British Army casualties. 30th July 2017 marks the centenary of the start of this iconic battle which, along with The Somme, has come for many to symbolise The Great War.
The commemorative service organised by the Hayfield RBL branch have invited all the local RBL branches to attend along with representatives from the uniformed youth groups across the borough along with, their standard bearers.
The branch extends an invite to all the community and public to attend providing the opportunity to acknowledge and show our thanks and gratitude to the one hundred and ten lads from the High Peak communitys who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Ample car parking is provided at the Hayfield Sett Valley Visitor Centre which is a very short walk from the church and refreshments will be served afterwards in the church hall.
Personal remembrance wreaths, crosses or posies for this service can be ordered through Lynne Howell on 07917832814 before 24th July 2017.
