Powderham Castle: Powderham Castle was built by Sir Philip Courtenay, ancester of the present 18th Earl of Devon, in 1391. The castle withstood the ravages of the Civil Wars and was embellished in the 18th Century with the addition of some fine interiors such as the Grand Staircase around 1727. The ornamental rococo plasterwork is amongst the finest in England.

Visit the majestic state rooms with our tour guides and hear fascinating stories of the castle and the lives of the Courtenay family, whose home is has been sence the Middle Ages. New for 2005 - take a scenic bike ride along our cycle path and get close to Powderham's famous fallow dear and the wildlife of the Exe Estuary.

Take a 1 mile trip through Powderham's glorious grounds to the Smithy and Children's Secret Garden on our fantastic miniature train. The Secret Garden is full of friendly animals including 70 year old 'Timmy 2', who succeeds Timothy our famous tortoise who lived for 165 years. There's something here for everyone; masses of space to run around, games to play and tractors for toddlers!

You can visit the Country Store for free. Open all year with plenty of parking, there's so much to enjoy. The Perfumed Garden offers a selection of quality shrubs and plants coupled with friendy and helpful advice.

In the food hall you'll find loads of Westcountry delights. Boasting an award winning butcher (Stillmans), an amazing bakery (Ryders) and a delicatessen stocking local cheese, hams, pies and pasties. .
