Morwellham 1860

Morwellham 1860, Morwellham, Devon, PL198JL

Morwellham 1860: On the banks of the beautiful river Tamar, amidst ancient wooded hills and acres of quiet organic meadows, this enchanting Victorian village is alive again. Once the centre of an extraordinary copper mining boom, the local characters can now reveal the parts they played, when Morwellham was 'The Greatest Copper port in Queen Victoria's Empire'.

Your journey begins with a ride along the banks of the River Tamar and then rumbles into the heart of the towering hillside. You are now entering the deep and dark world of The George and Charlotte Copper Mine, last worked over 100 years ago.

All human life is here as you explore the busy assay office, marvel at the over-crowded miner's cottages and stroll through the delightful, walled gardens. The Port museum tells the story Of Morwellham from its beginnings in the middle ages to its 19th century hey-day and the subsequent decline. A new feature here is an extensive display on the Tavistock Canal commissioned to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2003. The Mining museum includes photographs and artifacts from the major local mines.

Fresh local produce and home made cakes - enjoy lunch, a snack or a delicious cream tea at the village inn or pick up a hot pasty from the pasty house. WIth over seven miles of trails, plus woods, meadows and a nature reserve, there is plenty of space to let off steam!.
