FA Girls’ Football Week kicks off on 25th April 2016 to help encourage young girls to play football, and Essex County Girls League is joining in by hosting the 5 v 5 Round Robin Football Festival and FA Skills Sessions.
The week itself will see over 20,000 girls taking part in hundreds of events across the country. It is designed to raise awareness of the opportunities for girls to play football in their local area in a bid to encourage positive perception changes for girls, parents and teachers about football.
Football is the largest female team sport in England with more than 2.89 million players and there are more than 5,900 women’s and girls’ teams playing affiliated club football. Yet despite this, among girls surveyed by The FA, only half felt that football was a game for them – making events like the Round Robin Football Festival and FA Skills Session all the more important.

Donna McIvor, The FA national football participation manager, said: “Following the success of last year’s event, we’re delighted to be able to offer girls more opportunities to become involved in football than ever before.
“The upcoming Girls’ Football Week is set to be a fantastic showcase for girls’ and women’s football participation and we encourage as many groups and organisation as possible to become involved and give girls in their local community the opportunity to play football.”
Should you choose to setup your own event, The FA is offering free-to-use resources to participating schools and institutions, which include session guides and promotional materials, which can be accessed by registering the session at TheFA.com/GirlsFootballWeek
