Bristol Concert Orchestra Mozart and Shostakovich: Saturday March 3, 2012

Bristol Concert Orchestra: Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for wind and Shostakovich Symphony No.10

Bristol Concert Orchestra

Jessica Mogridge (oboe)

Nicholas Shipman (clarinet)

Claire Wadsworth (bassoon)

Jamie Thomas (horn)

Stefan Hofkes (conductor)

Coming soon after our performance of the mischievous yet beautiful 2nd Piano Concerto in our December concert, we now meet a very different side of Shostakovich with his 10th Symphony. To quote the man himself: Music is a means capable of expressing dark dramatism and pure rapture, suffering and ecstasy, fiery and cold fury, melancholy and wild merriment. All these elements and more are to be found in this fascinating work.

Contrasting this: two Hommages Mozart', the charming wind quartet version of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, and Ibert's 200th birthday present from 1956, a short study in Mozartean vitality refracted through the prism of mid-20th century Parisian harmonies.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of Friends of Kampala Music School.

Tickets: £13, £11, £9, £8 (concessions available), children £1 are available from St George's Bristol: 0845 40 24 001 or book online: http://www.stgeorgesbristol.co.uk/events/bristol-concert-orchestra/

Telford-based electro-rock band You and What Army describe themselves as "having unforgivingly catchy trance synths that soar over tectonic-plate-shatteringly heavy guitar riffs, dancefloor-destroyingly awesome basslines and lowrider-cruisingly phat beats, with the narrated apocalypse rapped, sung and screamed wildly into the fray."
