Nobody knows which is the King and so true to their republican roots, and until it can be ascertained, they decide to reign jointly.Their wives are delighted with the prospect of one of them being Queen, but later discover, to their horror, that the King was married, in babyhood, to somebody else! Add into the mix, a formidable Duchess, and her downtrodden Duke, their wilful daughter Casilda, and her secret love Luiz, The Grand Inquisitor of Spain, and a fabulous chorus of lovely Contadine and handsome Gondoliers.
