Woodchester Mansion Gloucestershire Overnight Ghost Hunt: Possibly one of the most eerie looking mansions that we visit. Set in the middle of acres of woodland and deep in a valley, cut off from all civilization, this truly has to be, one of the top places on our calendar.
History
Woodchester mansion is a grade I listed house in the Victorian Gothic style.
The Huntley family of Frocester was awarded by the Crown in 1564 and they built a hunting lodge. The hunting lodge was sold to the Ducie's in 1631 and then converted into a Georgian house called Spring Park Mansion.
In 1845 William Leigh bought the property after inheriting £100,000. He was a devout Catholic and he started to build a Catholic church and monastery at South Woodchester. In 1846 he asked Victorian architect A.W.N.Pugin and Pugin condemned the existing building then he resigned from the commission in 1846. Leigh then turned to architect Charles Hansom to build the church and monastery. That was completed in 1849. Meanwhile the Leigh's lived in a cottage which remained the family home until the First World war. Mid 1850 he started to work on the mansion, money then started to dry up as there was not much capital left. Benjamin
Bucknall was employed in Hansom's office and eventually became architect for the mansion. Gargoyles and unusual ceiling roses don the mansion. There are a couple of reasons why the work was unfinished on the mansion. Some say the workers down tools when they protested about it being evil, and there was such a tale of a worker falling to his death from a ladder being pushed by unseen hands. Another reason was because the money had simply dried up and it would cost more to run the place so it was never completed.
Paranormal Activity
A headless horseman has been seen at the gates, plus another apparition there. A spirit of David the foreman of the mansion, is very unpleasant and he makes himself known by growls and heavy breathing. Two elementals have been picked up here and also a mad professor in the cellar. One elemental is a small goblin like figure, the other is around 7ft tall and keeps changing shape is very foreboding. In the chapel area our medium picked up on a man in robes called Richard who was promised to be appointed to
the chapel, but since this never came about, he was very disgruntled about it. Rustling in the bathroom area is also heard, it is said that it is the dress of a lady who used to reside in the mansion, or previous house. When reciting the Lord's prayer in the room next to the chapel, one of our team received a sharp prod to the back. In the eaves of the mansion, stone throwing occurred where there was no possibility of stones falling down from above. However over the edge of the fenced off area down below, plenty of stones similar was found but that area is cordoned off so no public can get there. So how did it manage to get at least 30 feet up into the air to land on the floor of the eaves? There is also a lady in the scullery that likes to hum and sing. We have an evp recording of that hum when asked if they would like to sit down on the bench on a lone group vigil when nobody else was about and everyone who was there accounted that it was not them or their voice.
