Lisa Dierick as Eleanor Bryant
Dieter Brusselaers as the Mirror Technician
Mirror Mirror was written in 1979 by Robert Calvert. This one-act play portrays Eleanor Bryant and her psychechromic dress which responds to her feelings and moods and her multiperspectival mirror which reflects her image as others see her… but the mirror doesn’t seem to be working so she calls a Mirror Technician.
Robert Calvert (1945-1988) is best known for his work as lyricist and vocalist with Hawkwind from 1972 to 1979, during which time he co-wrote their hit single Silver Machine and directed their Space Ritual tour.
But he considered himself primarily a writer and poet. At the end of the 1960s he moved to London, and soon became an active member of the underground and psychedelic scenes. His poems and stories were published in Frendz, New Worlds and other magazines. He mixed poetry, music and theatrical ideas, instigating ‘multimedia performance’ long before that term came into fashion. After his death in 1988, he left a huge legacy of written work: poetry, song lyrics, plays, short stories.
Léonie met Robert Calvert in the late ‘60s when he read from his play The Box. He regularly performed his poetry at Pentameters and an early poem Marriage was published in Pentameters’ Anthology 2. Encouraged by Léonie, he wrote The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice, first produced at Pentameters in 1976.
