Exuberant, passionate, uplifting and joyous, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today!
“Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other path, no other way, no day but today.” - Jonathan Larson, RENT.
In Manhattan’s East Village, a group of friends share their dreams, losses and love, whilst trying to find their place in a world gripped by the HIV/AIDS outbreak.
RENT, loosely based on Puccini’s opera La Bohème, follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends. Their stories are told through musical narration, painting a stunningly raw and emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City in the late 1980s.
Jonathan Larson’s RENT opened Off-Broadway in 1996 and quickly became a global phenomenon. The show earned Larson multiple Tony Awards along with a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a distinction not received again by a music theatre work until 14 years later. Though Larson himself never saw the impact of his masterwork – he died suddenly in the early hours of the very day the show opened to the public – its longevity serves as a testament to the emotional resonance of Larson’s creation and an embodiment of its ever-present message: “no day but today”.
RENT has been creatively staged and produced, and brought to life by a talented local cast at Teddington Theatre Club. With powerful and versatile performances that match the expressive style of music (from despair to ecstasy), this rock musical features unforgettable songs, captivating stories and enthralling performances, expertly combined together to narrate the lives of young people in modern day life.
Director Dane Hardie will hold a special post-show discussion on Sunday, June 26, and says
"When RENT debuted on Broadway, it was a game changer. No one could foresee how it would influence and shape musical theatre and the wider attitudes and preconceptions on what can be attained through performance.
Performance times: Sunday 6pm, weekdays 7.45pm
