O Fortuna! Is there any more powerful classical music than Carl Orff's Carmina Burana? Wrote in 1935 and based off a 11th century medieval text of the same name Carmina Burana is Orff's masterpiece. Feeling so strongly about the strength of this work Orff considered his career beginning with it's first performance in 1937. He even told all who'd listen that his prior work should be ignored or destroyed! The Carmina Burana consists of 5 sections of 25 movements. It's topics? Still of interest today running the range of human experience. Everything from joy and dangers of eroticism, gambling and drinking to the struggle of life itself are covered in a intensity that rouses the soul! As strong as the music is the true power of the Carmina Burana lies in it's live performance. Orff advocated what he named the "theatrum mundi" the idea that the music, speech and movement on stage were all essential parts of fully appreciating his work. This tradition has been carried on from it's first performance to today. In fact those of us in the U.K. will get to experience this first hand shortly, with plans being set for the Carmina Burana to be performed live for us soon. Don't miss out!
