Part of Piccadilly Piano Festival at St James's
Doors 7pm, Support 7:30pm-7:55pm, Interval 7:55pm-8:15pm, John Grant 8:15pm-9:10pm
The inventive artist, known for his dulcet baritone and unique brand of melodic chamber-pop, is joined by singers from LCV Choir for a special one-off intimate show with voice and pianoSupported by alt-pop songstress Faultress
John Grant's recent successes include a Top 10 UK chart entry for his new album Boy From Michigan, which also topped the vinyl charts; a broadsheet front cover in-conversation interview with Sir Elton John; and an expanding list of sold-out shows across the UK
His debut album was voted MOJO Magazine's best of 2010 and since then Grant's profile has risen through a series of rapturously received and chart-bothering albums that entwined acutely melodic chamber-pop with darkly glittering dance music tropesAgainst this brooding and inventive backdrop and channelled through his glorious dulcet baritone, Grant unleashed autobiographical laments and diatribes, as painful and intimate as they were caustic and savagely funny
Over time, Grant has established himself as one of the great musical chroniclers of the American Dream, angled mostly from its flipside, where your dreams go to die and everything turns to ashGrant knows America well enough to document it in microscopic, painterly detail, which draws the listener in to a specific sense of place, before untangling its significance with a rich cast-list of local characters
Michigan is where Grant's journey began, where he felt compelled to hide emerging same-sex feelings from his God-fearing family and communityThe Grants' move to Colorado where John spent his miserable closeted teens, and the emotional fall-out, led to severe depression and substance/alcohol addictionThis did not prevent him from going on to win numerous accolades including Attitude Magazine's Man of the Year award, and a BRIT award nomination for Best International Male Solo Artist
Previous collaborators include Sinead O'Connor, Alison Goldfrapp, Elbow, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and Susanne SundforGrant was also one of four vocalists to perform Songs Of Scott Walker as part of 2017's BBC Proms season, with The Heritage Orchestra and London Contemporary Voices, conducted by Jules Buckley at the Royal Albert Hall - a venue that Grant had sold out on his own the previous year 2016
London Contemporary Voices (LCV) is one of the UK's leading contemporary choirsLCV has worked with hundreds of award-winning artists from U2, Sam Smith and ABBA, to Lewis Capaldi, Wolf Alice and Alt-JWith singers from a range of musical backgrounds, many of whom are artists in their own right, LCV is known for its contemporary sound and popular session videos which have amassed millions of views online
Supported by FaultressFaultress creates incisive and psychological songs that offer us a look into the complex fragmentation of feminine power, desire and mental health in a rapidly changing musical and cultural worldWith a diverse set of influences that includes the likes of Kate Bush, James Blake, Aldous Harding, FKA Twigs and Joni Mitchell, she has won her accolades from Clash and Tom Robinson, and she has featured on BBC 6 Music numerous timesHer musical storytelling centres around the female experience of mental health, desire and powerFor example, her song Vampires relays her ongoing battle with intermittent anxious depression; the overwhelming consumption of it on the body and mind and then the ease of its disappearance
