The artist presents an in-depth exploration into the phenomenon of vision, perception and the gaze. Grasso is able to take advantage of the gallery’s extraordinary level of access to the work of some of the world’s leading modern masters, he has selected historical and surrealist pieces by artists including Max Ernst, René Magritte, Francis Picabia and Odilon Redon which will be shown alongside a selection of Grasso’s own recent paintings, video, sculptures and neon’s, created especially for the exhibition.
Spanning centuries of enquiry around the meaning of sight and vision, Grasso’s exhibition addresses historical perceptions of the eye as a source of light, scientific Renaissance treatises about the eye’s anatomy, Surrealist approaches to vision as spirituality, and materialist conceptions of the eye as a physical, concrete organ. Within the show, the viewer will be enter a room surrounded by eyes from works spanning across historical and contemporary, immersing the viewer in an environment of scrutinising and mysterious gazes.
Working across oil painting, video and sculptural works, Grasso conflates references to different historical periods and intellectual histories, to construct intentionally ambiguous juxtapositions of time and space. His previous works draw on disparate sources such as Renaissance understandings of astronomical phenomena, 18th century perceptions of the paranormal, modern physics and science fiction. Grasso was recipient of the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2008.
