Making Monologues Theatre & Performing Arts

Learn how monologues can be a fun and practical way for writers and performers to develop their own original story ideas.

In this workshop series, participants will be guided through a set of focused writing and devising exercises to create original stand-alone monologues (which can then be developed into a larger performed or written work).
Each week will focus on a different set of exercises and skills:
11 March 2017 - Week 1 (11 am to 2 pm): Character and ConflictCharacter and conflict are the basic essentials for any story. In this week we will focus on creating monologues with three dimensional characters experiencing real world problems.
18 March 2017 - Week 2 (11 am to 2 pm): Story and Change This week will focus on the difference between plot and story and how we can use this knowledge to create monologues that have strong and satisfying narratives.
25 March 2017 - Week 3 (11 am to 2 pm): Lists and Images This week we explore how we can use “little” details to evoke feelings and create powerful and poetic monologues which will really show your character’s situation.
Workshops are £10 each or £25 for all three.
Suitable for performers and writers of all experience levels.
Tutor: Sean Bruno
Sean is a London-based performer and writer and a member of The Conway Collective. His solo works tend to use a combination of lecture, spoken word, cabaret and storytelling to confront with poignancy and humour the specific subjects he feels lay at the core of his (and our) anxieties. His previous shows have been about thermonuclear destruction, damnation, dementia, lovelessness and orthodontistry. He is a regular collaborator with choreographer Jo Meredith. Together they have created narrative dance works which have been seen at The Place, Wilton’s Music Hall and Sadler’s Wells. In 2015 they formed the Meredith Bruno Company. In 2011 he co-founded The Centre for Solo Performance at Conway Hall with Luke Dixon.
