On 23 September, we will be unveiling a giant mural at 195 Mare Street at 6pm

Painted by Thiago Mazza, the celebrated Brazilian mural artist, the mural is inspired by Hackney's history of plant cultivation and Loddiges Nursery, which was based on the other side of Mare Street in the 18th and 19th centuriesThe nursery grew plants from all over the world in huge hothouses - palms, orchids, ferns, rhododendrons, camelias, azelias, wisteria, bamboo, and thousands more - introducing new species to Europe and changing our habitats forever

Loddiges' story connects us to Hackney's long history of migration - many of the plants came from the homelands of Hackney's current residentsAnd it sparks conversations about colonial exploitation of natural resources and the implications of climate change for our habitats
