OXFORD STREET PARTNERS WITH THE NSPCC FOR SECOND YEAR RUNNING FOR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON

Tuesday 7th November 2017

The world’s leading shopping street, Oxford Street will shine brighter than ever before on Tuesday 7th November as children’s charity NSPCC partners with Oxford Street for the 58th annual Oxford Street Christmas Lights Switch On with Global –media & entertainment group– marking the official start of the 2017 Christmas shopping season.

For the second year running Oxford Street has partnered with the NSPCC, which is joining forces with Sky Cinema to deliver ‘Light up Christmas for Children’, a festive campaign created to give a brighter future for children in need of help by raising money for Childline. The partnership will officially launch on the day of the switching on of the world famous Oxford Street Christmas Lights - tapping into the magic of Christmas while supporting a really important and worthwhile cause.

Following on from the success of 2016 which saw a total footfall of 43.9 million during the Christmas season and 1.14 million during the lights switch on event, 2017 is set to be more magical than ever.

The 2017 Christmas Light Switch-On sees Oxford Street once again partner with Global. Thousands of shoppers are expected to watch the switch on which is supported by over 300 Oxford Street retailers, spectators will see a magnificent light display, marking the launch of the Christmas season.

The organisers are fully committed to protecting the environment, using 750,000 LED bulbs, which use 75% less energy than conventional bulbs. The lights scheme is inspired by falling snow flakes, and sees the whole mile of Oxford Street covered in a blanket of bright white lights and 1,778 baubles, giving visitors a real feeling that Christmas is coming.

Peter Wanless, Chief Executive of the NSPCC, said: : “We are delighted to be chosen as charity partner for the Oxford Street Christmas Lights for the second year running and are very excited to help light up the world famous display once again. This year’s lights switch-on also coincides with the start of our ‘Light up Christmas for Children’ campaign.
“With our partners Sky Cinema we will be aiming to raise funds for Childline so this vital service is accessible to all young people who reach out for help and advice.”
Jace Tyrrell, CEO at New West End Company, the organisers of the event, says:
“The Oxford Street Christmas lights switch on is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the winter season. With continued support from NSPCC and Global, Christmas is set to be a magical time along Oxford Street.

We are thrilled to be working with NSPCC for the second year running, with a switch on that is guaranteed to create a moment of happiness and togetherness, lifting spirits across the country. 2017 is set to be as outstanding as ever and the bright white lights are guaranteed to amaze visitors from across the globe as they head to Europe’s favourite shopping destination.”
