But what happens in these epic geographies when you dare to stray from the path? Three fabulous storytellers go off-map, navigate uncharted waters cross into mysterious other worlds and get more than a little bit lost.Powerful and bold, Jan Blake is the Queen of Afro-Caribbean Storytelling. An outstanding storyteller, she performs in theatres and festivals the length and breadth of Europe. Jan was born in Manchester to Jamaican parents. Inspired by recordings of ‘Miss Lou’ (Louise Bennett) she came to telling stories in 1986, and rapidly gained an international reputation for witty and exhilarating performances. Specialising in folktales from West Africa, North Africa, the Arab world and the Caribbean, her repertoire is full of tales of powerful women and her versions of Ananse’s exploits are definitive.
Tim Ralphs is one of the most exciting young talents on the British storytelling scene. Teller in residence of the Word Smack Cabaret and host of Sheffield’s The Story Forge, his performance style is energetic and his composition knows no bounds. Tim's work draws on our international narrative inheritance, the ever-changing cityscape of his home, fairytale, myth, legend and downright surrealism. His performances merge the contemporary with the ancient with enviable integrity and a touch of genius.
Daniel Morden is one of the leading exponents in the art of storytelling. For 23 years he has delighted audiences all over the world at story telling festivals including those in Vancouver, Oslo and the Yukon. In the UK he has been seen at The Hay Festival as well as Beyond The Border, Bath and Cheltenham festivals. In London he has performed at venues from the Barbican and National Theatre to the British Museum. The award-winning, Abergavenny-based storyteller has also worked on TV and radio and published books for both children and adults.
