John Rylands Library, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M33EH

John Rylands Library: The John Rylands Library, Deansgate is now temporarily closed in preparation for major renovation and construction work.

The John Rylands University Library (JRUL) is the largest non-legal-deposit academic library in the United Kingdom, providing services and resources to students, researchers and academic staff as well as members of the public, schools and commercial companies. JRUL holds the widest range of electronic resources of any UK Higher Education library. The Library's greatest benefactor, Richard Copley Christie, funded the University's first separate library building (again designed by Waterhouse) which opened in 1898. By 1903, the year in which Owens College became the Victoria University of Manchester, its library housed around 100,000 volumes.

The John Rylands Library building on Deansgate in the city centre houses our special collections of older material, and holds regular exhibitions based on our stock. The building itself, constructed in the 1890s, is one of the finest examples of modern Gothic architecture in Europe. .
