A Charity Event to Support the British Heart Foundation in memory of Ian Brown, who passed away in December 2021 following major heart surge
Ian came from a musical family and his musical talent was recognised very early in his life. Aged just 16 he took the solo Euphonium seat with Pressed Steel Fisher band to play "Othello" in contest, leaving immediately after the performance to take up a position in HM Band of the Welsh Guards, where he stayed for 12 years. This was as well as working as a session musician, playing on the recordings of film music such as Watership Down and Bed Knobs and Broomsticks. He even enjoyed a stint with Billy Smarts Circus Band. After leaving the army, Ian played with several local brass band - including Kidlington Concert Brass and Wantage Band. Ian took pleasure in playing music just for the sake of playing music and his tastes were very wide and varied. In later years, he was often seen busking in central Oxford and no matter what he was doing, he would always stop playing to chat to people and play nursery rhymes for children. His talent was such that if asked to play something he wasn't familiar with, he'd ask the requester "how does that go?", then he'd play it for them. By contrast, he would go to one of the colleges to listen to one of the lunchtime organ recitals - an instrument he was particularly fond of. As well as playing music that holds a special memory of Ian, the concert will feature recordings from HM Band of the Welsh Guards from the time that Ian held the Solo Euphonium seat.Venue: Exeter Hall, Oxford Rd Oxford Road, Oxfordshire, OX5 1AB
