Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery: Situated by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, and housed in part of the old Victoria Mill, Saddleworth Museum is full of intriguing objects from the past. The Museum tells the story of the people who have created Saddleworth's landscape and character. Visitors can find out about the prehistoric summer visitors who hunted on the hill tops, the Roman soldiers at Castleshaw Fort, the farmers who wove cloth in their own homes, the men, women and children who endured long hours in the mills, the canal and railway builders, and the Morris Men and brass bands. . .
There is something to appeal to everyone at Saddleworth Museum. Textile Machinery Working Days appeal to young and old alike. Children can get to grips with history in our 'hands-on' Activity Area or they can borrow a Family box and use real Museum objects as clues to Saddleworth's hidden past. In addition we have coffee mornings, craft days and family activity days to entertain you!
The first gallery in the museum is called 'This is Saddleworth'. Here you can see Saddleworth in the round: history, landscape and inhabitants. Many fine objects, collected and donated by local people are displayed here.
The second gallery is about domestic life in Saddleworth and is particularly popular with children. There is a recently redisplayed interior of an eighteenth century weaver's cottage, a Victorian house and a shop window with changing displays. .
