Titchfield Abbey: A 13th century abbey converted into a stately manor, the Tudor gatehouse being formed from the nave. An abbey was first founded at Titchfield in the 13th century by the Bishop of Winchester. Its history was uneventful until the Dissolution when drastic alterations were made to convert the abbey into a stately mansion known as Place House.
Now a ruin, the remains are magnificent. The four-storey Tudor gatehouse, formed out of the nave of the abbey church, is particularly grand with its large turrets, gargoyles on the parapets and mock arrow-slit windows. The original doors also remain. You can see the entrance to the old chapter house and outlines of the cloister.
