RSPB Nature Reserve Lydd, Lydd, Kent, TN299PN

RSPB Nature Reserve Lydd: The Dungeness peninsula is a unique site, famous for its lighthouse, light railway and bird observatory, but there is much more to explore.

The RSPB reserve covers a wide swathe of shingle and a series of pools and pits rich in wildlife. The picture windows in the visitor centre overlook a lake full of birds, especially gulls and wildfowl in winter and terns in summer.

Paths lead you around the reserve to a series of further pools and birdwatching hides, each providing a different bird experience.

As it projects out into the English Channel, Dungeness is often the first, or last, landfall for migrating birds and the open water and scattered bushes around the site can be very rewarding for the birdwatcher at any season.

The gift shop and refreshments are available year-round and there is a comprehensive series of guided walks, including some special events for families based around the theme of 'nature detective'.

What you should know...

Dungeness is a very exposed site be prepared to dress warmly at any time of year. Many of the paths are made up of large, loose pebbles.

New to birdwatching

A good variety of waterfowl and seabirds can be easily seen from the visitor centre and hides. Staff usually on hand in the visitor centre to help with identification. Identification charts in all hides. Four beginners' walks run each year.

Information for families

Families are always welcome at RSPB Dungeness and a huge range of family friendly activities goes on throughout the year. Use a Wildlife Explorer rucksack (free of charge) to explore the reserve and the children's trail on your own or join one of our events to get expert tuition on activities such as pond dipping, minibeasts, bird watching or being a nature detective to name just a few. Family events run throughout the school holidays; children must be accompanied by an adult who joins in free of charge.
