Welcome to Kinrossshire

Kinross-shire or the County of Kinross was a Scottish County until 1975 when it became part of the Tayside Region. From 1996 onwards it has been part of the Perth and Kinross council area. The county town was traditionally Kinross and the county was bordered to the west by Clackmannanshire, to the east and south by Fife and to the north by Perthshire.

The region of Kinross-shire is exceptionally beautiful, set amongst rolling green hills and endless farmland, as well as rugged hills and a wide variety of wildlife, with Loch Leven, a massive inland loch (containing two islands and an internationally important nature reserve) at its heart. On one of the islands (Castle Island) of the Loch there is a beautiful and famous castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in 1567. The Loch is Scotland’s largest lowland freshwater loch and is home to brown trout and a massive waterfowl population, as well as the largest population of breeding freshwater duck in Britain.

There are castles and ancient sites in every corner of the region and historic figures from Queen Margaret and William Wallace to Robert the Bruce have spent time there. Nowadays it makes for a peaceful retreat and the ideal place to indulge in some fishing, bird-watching, golf, cycling, hiking or walking. Known as the gateway to the highlands, Kinross-shire is a splendid destination and worth spending a day or two all on its own.
