The city is set to make cycling history this year by hosting four European Cycling Championships - road, track, BMX and mountain biking - in the same place at the same time. While Glasgow enjoys global attention, Nightrider will offer an alternative cycling experience. It's a unique way to explore the city's iconic sights and lesser-known attractions. Nightrider is different to many other fundraising events: it's not timed, it's not a race and everyone taking part can support any charity they choose. Together they will aim to raise £120,000 in one night. Numerous good causes will benefit including British Heart Foundation, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, Epilepsy Scotland, Macmillan Cancer Support, MND Scotland and the NSPCC. Nightrider places are still available, but the event is expected to be a sell-out.
There are two distances to choose from - 50km or 100km - so there is something for everyone, from novice riders to more experienced cyclists. The circular ride will start and finish beside the River Clyde, with spectacular views across the illuminated city bathed in moonlight. Highlights of the route include the four football grounds, Glasgow and Strathclyde universities, Billy Connolly murals, Clydeside, Barrowlands, Pollok Country Park, Cathkin Braes, Glasgow Cathedral, Byres Road and Sauchiehall Street, to name just a few.
Nightrider has all the ingredients to be the best night out this summer. It offers the chance to have fun, get active and enjoy an evening with a difference, while doing something positive. The event is popular with friends and family, plus there are corporate packages available so it's an ideal team building event for companies. Nic Merrett took part in London Nightrider 2017 for The Mango Tree Orphan Support Programme. He said: "Great organisation, wonderful atmosphere, all for very worthwhile causes close to the hearts of the cyclists."
Nightrider is organised by leading charity tour operator Classic Challenge. Each route is clearly sign-posted so that Nightriders can cycle at their own pace. There are break stops every 25km plus medical support and mechanical backup are provided throughout the night. Everyone receives a well-earned breakfast and medal at the finish line. The event is supported by Cycle Republic (official mechanical partner) and Virgin Money Giving (official fundraising partner). Nightrider events will also be taking place in London and Liverpool in 2018.
