In space no one can hear you scream.
Has there ever been a better suited, more sinister tagline for a film than that? While many Sci-Fi films in the late 1970s were trying their best to replicate and rip-off Star Wars, Ridley Scott’s Alien was an entirely new and different breed of science fiction film all together. A small but offbeat crew of the Nostromo spacecraft respond to a distress call and investigate a strange, derelict planet containing many mysterious looking eggs. However, the repercussions of this mission become very grave when an ostensibly un-killable extraterrestrial stows away on the ship they inhabit, and starts picking them off, one by one.
With Dan O’Bannon’s screenplay playing off of the old B-Movie ‘monster from outer space’ genre while Scott’s richly detailed and well-paced direction created an unnerving anxiety more in tune with the slasher genre, Alien is truly one of the greatest horror films ever made. See it on the big screen, followed by its sequel, Aliens (get a ticket to that here).
“I was really lucky getting the part of Ripley, because it took my career down a much less conventional route than I had thought I had wanted. I had dreamt of being mostly a stage actor, which was the kind of career my mother had. Shakespeare and all that. I think what helped was that I wasn't falling over backwards to get the role. I thought, 'Right, I'm going to be chased around the room by this big blob of Jell-O.’” Sigourney Weaver, 2014
