TOM's Film Club: Batman Returns (1992) Film / Cinema

This Christmas, we’re showing a special 25th anniversary screening of an alternative yuletide classic: Batman Returns. Starring Michael Keat

Starring Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight in Tim Burton’s significantly darker, but altogether more Christmas themed movie. With a stellar supporting cast including Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken.

After doing battle with Jack Nicholson’s Joker in the first film, Michael Keaton’s Batman returns to Gotham City to face the Penguin (DeVito in a genuinely tragic and sympathetic performance), who conspires with corrupt businessman Max Shreck (named after actor Max Schreck who played Count Orlok in F. W. Murnau’s seminal silent masterpiece Nosferatu) to make himself mayor. When the tycoon (Christopher Walken, of course) tries to kill his secretary, she returns as a vengeful vigilante, referring to herself only as Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer in one of her most iconic roles). Before the immediate influx of superhero films of the past ten years, Batman Returns in comparison seems much more original and daring than these current crops of comic book movies, while at the same time pretty much writing the book on “dark and brooding” which all these recent DC and Marvel films live on.

“This time the richness of the Batman movie is not in its production design but rather in Burton's and screenwriter Daniel Waters' Freudian view of adult human behaviour [...] it should be a pleasure for non-adolescents to encounter a comic-book action picture in which the characters are more important than their gadgets.” Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune
