TOM's Film Club: Kes (1969) Film / Cinema

One of Ken Loach’s earliest cinematic triumphs, Kes is often considered one of the greatest British films ever made, and with good reason.

Well, that were it, sir. I’d trained her, sir, and that were all I could do.”

One of Ken Loach’s earliest cinematic triumphs, Kes is often considered one of the greatest British films ever made (ranked 7th on BFI’s Top 100 British Films), and with good reason; nearly fifty years on from when it was originally released, the film still feels as authentic and as bleak as when it first came out in 1969. The film depicts the life of a rebellious but withdrawn Barnsley boy named Billy Casper (played brilliantly by non-professional David Bradley in his film debut), as he tries to seek refuge from bullies at school and troubles from home. He eventually finds and adopts a kestrel, learns to train it, and through his bond with the bird finds a new freedom and purpose in life he never knew he could experience before.

Based on Barry Hines’ novel A Kestrel for a Knave (which he co-wrote the screenplay with Loach and producer Tony Garnett), Kes is a profoundly beautiful coming-of-age story, which mirrored Loach’s previous social realist work in television while also establishing a template for future Loach films to come; themes and issues such as the plight of the poor, the affect of public institutions on working class people, natural lighting and visual style, rural locations, traditional unaltered dialogue, and raw performances from non-professional actors can all still be found in Loach films today, with Kes being one of the best of his fifty-plus year career.

“Like Loach’s subsequent films, Kes preserves the accents and colloquialisms of northern England in the film’s dialogue, adding an authenticity absent from most commercial British productions. Bradley’s alternately emotional and reserved performance surely ranks as one of the great adolescent portraits in cinema, joining the likes of Jean-Pierre Leaud in The 400 Blows (François Truffaut, 1959).” Mike Robins, Senses of Cinema
