Based on his memoir My Left Foot, Christy Brown was an Irish man with cerebral palsy who found acclaim for his writings & paintings which he
Born into a large working class family in the slums of Dublin, Christy from birth is disregarded as a hopeless case by the medical establishment but through the support of his devoted mother learns to read, write and paint with exceptional skill, talents which would have eluded young Christy had he been sent to an institution. With strong supporting turns from Brenda Fricker (who also won Academy gold for her performance) as Brown’s stoical ma, marvellous character actor Ray McAnally (who sadly passed away before the release of the film) as Brown’s strong-willed but hard-drinking pa, and especially Hugh O’Connor who embodies Christy in his younger years with such seamless beauty, as he learns to use his left foot to score goals, write his name in chalk and show the world that he is beyond the disability that impairs him.Directed by one of Ireland’s finest filmmakers Jim Sheridan in his directorial debut, My Left Foot is a brilliant filmic accomplishment of human courage and strength against adversity and hardships. The actor would later work again with Sheridan on In the Name of the Father and The Boxer, but it’s this first collaboration that has since become their most celebrated, and never was an Academy Award for acting more deserved than by Day-Lewis for his raw, authentic and hugely passionate performance.
