TOM's Film Club: Underground (1995) Film / Cinema

Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or in 1995, Emir Kusturica’s Underground is an epic dramedy which chronicles the history of Yugoslavia ove

Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, Kusturica’s second such award after his 1985 film When Father Was Away on Business, Underground is as marvellously excessive as it is outrageous and carnivalesque. Two friends, Blacky and Marko, build a massive underground weapons making complex to protect their town from the German invasion in WWII while they join the communist guerrilla fighters. Marko is the first member of the resistance movement to reach the surface after the war is over, but he neglects to tell the others that the war has ended so they can continue manufacturing arms. What follows are many surreal and satirical subplots, moments of sheer slapstick that could rival a silent comedy and a lot of brass and gypsy music keeping score of the situation. As Chicago critic Jonathan Rosenbaum puts it, “a triumph of mise en scène mated to a comic vision that keeps topping its own hyperbole.”

“If Fellini had shot a war movie, it might resemble "Underground". Emir Kusturica's epic black comedy about Yugoslavia from 1941 to 1992 is a three-hour steamroller circus that leaves the viewer dazed and exhausted, but mightily impressed.” Deborah Young, Variety

After this screening, there will be live music in the bar from Beggars Belief, a Brighton-based band with a passion for folk music from all corners of the world: Drifting along a path less traveled from hot club France to Yiddish weddings in cockney London, sailing south to southern Spain and the Balkans, fiddling with Irish folk in the plains of mid west America, and all with the common belief that music knows no borders.
