Donington Le Heath Manor House, Donington le Heath, Leicestershire, LE672FW

Donington-le-Heath Manor House: A 13th century stone house ,renovated in the 17th century with gardens that have been re-created in a 17th century style. Donington-le-Heath Manor House was built in the late 13th century and was renovated early in the 17th century. Visitors to the house can now see restored rooms and displays on medieval life as well as a series of temporary exhibitions on a wide range of subjects. The house is set in recently recreated 17th century style gardens with flower gardens, an orchard, herb gardens and a maze.

Donington-le-Heath Manor House is a surviving example of a family home built around seven hundred years ago. This thirteenth century building was modernised in 1618. The house was owned by Everard Digby, one of the Gunpowder Plotters.

The flower garden at the Manor house makes use of books produced by seventeenth century plant collectors to provide details of the flowers in a garden of that time. A popular feature of seventeenth century formal gardens was an ornamental maze. These were a development of the Elizabethan decorative knot gardens of the previous century. The maze at the Manor House has been re-modelled and is open to visitors. .
