Preparing for Battle – The Battle of Lincoln Fair 1217
2017 marks the remarkable 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln Fair. This battle has been described as the most important conflict on English soil after the Battle of Hastings. And so to commemorate this momentous occasion we return the Castle to the 13th Century with the sights, sounds and smells of the medieval castle. On this, the anniversary weekend we invite you into the Castle to meet witness and discover the preparations for that conflict. See the artisan at work preparing bows and arrows, the Castle garrison being drilled under the watchful eye of the Castellan –Lady Nichola dela Haye. Hear news of the French attack force as heralds and spies bring the news. Witness the arrival of the Kings champion – Sir William Marshall – the best Knight in England and Regent to the new, boy King. Be roused by his rallying call and join us the following weekend to see how the story unfolds and history is made.
This event also precedes the exhibition "Battles and Dynasties" at The Collection and Usher art Gallery which examines with a rich collection of artefacts, documents, portraits and arms, the dynastic struggles in the Country over the Centuries including this most important of medieval battles - the Battle of Lincoln Fair 1217.
