Authors In Conversation / Book Launch: F C Delius and Blake Morrison have both written books about their mothers, and they frequently use a real person (contemporary or historical) as the impetus to write a book.

On 16 September Delius, one of Germanys most critically acclaimed contemporary writers, will talk with poet and writer Blake Morrison about his book Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman (Bildnis der Mutter als junge Frau) at the Goethe-Institut London. The book first appeared in German in 2006 and is now published in English in a translation by Jamie Bulloch, who will also be on the podium.

Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman provides a compelling portrayal of a young German. The woman, pregnant with her first child, takes a walk through Rome one January afternoon in 1943. Innocent and nave, the fighting exists for her as little more than a day-dream until she realizes that her husband might never return from Africa. Through the medium of a single sentence the reader pieces together the heroines emerging understanding of war.

Please note: The Goethe-Institut London would like to invite you to a glass of wine and the opening of the exhibition Images of Germany - 8 photographic positions on Thursday, 16 September 2010, at 6pm, an hour before the book launch.
