Melanie Jackson ’Ur Pflanze’: London-based artist Melanie Jackson is embarking on a research project titled The Urpflanze (Part 1) in which shell use The Drawing Room as a laboratory in which to incubate drawings, animations, sculptures and film sets to storyboard this proposal of the Urpflanze and all its past and future plants.

The research project references The Urpflanze, an ancient palm tree, as a starting point to explore our future, time travel and the relationship between industry, aesthetics and plant forms.

The project explores the research methodologies of contemporary plant scientists. It will consider the vision government agencies have for plant science, and the ways in which they aspire for us to re-imagine our relationship with plants, and how might we begin to re-conceptualise plants in the future, to see them as green factories.

The animations, sculptures and drawings will seek to imagine and visualise the future of plant science, but also to visually explicate the phenomena and methodologies of the scientists work. The publication in the form of a newspaper will contain drawings, photographs, research evidence and texts that have grown from a dialogue between the artist Melanie Jackson and the writer Esther Leslie, Professor of Political Aesthetics, Birkbeck University.
