Liverpool Mozart Orchestra: Germanic Greats
NB: Pre-concert talk at 6.45pm
Wagner Siegfried Idyll
Haydn Symphony No.94 "Surprise"
Schubert Symphony No. 9 “Great”
Conductor Maxime Tortelier
The LMO’s 2016-17 season opens with lush, romantic harmonies from the great operatic composer, Wagner. He penned the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday gift for his wife Cosima. Listen out for the oboe solo, a tender German lullaby. Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony was enormously well received at its premiere in London: it’s a complete contrast to the Wagner – to say more would spoil the great surprise! Then to round off this evening of ‘greats’, Schubert’s 9th symphony, the “Great”: arguably his finest orchestral piece, full of charm, lilting melodies and sonorous harmonies – sit back and have a great time!
Liverpool Mozart Orchestra
The Liverpool Mozart Orchestra is a chamber orchestra whose members include music professionals in addition to experienced players from a wide range of other occupational backgrounds. Founded in 1951, the LMO works with professional soloists and conductors, including its President, Sir Simon Rattle. The LMO is also pleased to offer a platform each season for emerging young musicians: many from Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music.
Maxime Tortelier
Born into a musical family, Maxime studied piano from the age of five and graduated in literature and languages from university in Lyon, France, before picking up a baton. Currently a Leverhulme Arts Scholar, Maxime first made his conducting mark with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, then with the BBC Philharmonic, with whom he made his Proms début in 2015. He has worked with a number of world-renowned orchestral conductors, including the LMO’s President. Maxime first conducted the LMO in May of this year and we are delighted to welcome him back to the rostrum for the opening concert of our 2016-17 season.
