Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave Manor, Sulgrave, Northamptonshire,

Sulgrave Manor: A gentle stroll through three centuries of English history in the company of a friendly and informative guide. Sulgrave Manor is a small manor-house, built by a Lancashireman born at Warton about 1500.

The entrance to the house in Tudor times was by the porch at the south. It was added by Lawrence Washington after he had completed his south front, and above the doorway he had placed, in plaster, the royal arms and the initials ER for Elizabeth Regina. Of these arms little more can be seen now than the heraldic supporters, a lion crowned and a dragon, together with a fleur-de-lys and Tudor rose.

One of the most attractive features of the Manor is its grounds. To the east is the knot-garden, in the centre of which has been placed a sundial dating from 1579. Around this, lavender flourishes and many thousands of bags of Sulgrave lavender have crossed the Atlantic since the house was opened. On either side of the porch are herbaceous borders, and stretching southwards is the well-kept lawn with its fine topiary work.

The Tudor Tour is the foundation of the programme offered at Sulgrave. Very much a curriculum based, structured day, a costumed member of the Manor's Education Team meets the children on arrival. Having been shown where to leave their lunch things etc. The group walks through the gardens of the Manor to enter the house itself, spending their time in the Great Hall, the Kitchen and the Bedchamber.
