Paxton House: Situated on the banks of the river Tweed, Paxton House is a hidden gem. Built by the Adam brothers in 1758 for the young Patrick Home it is perhaps the finest example of 18th century Palladian Country houses in Britain.
Landscaped in the 18th Century by Robert Robinson, Paxton now lies at the heart of eighty acres of woodland, parkland and gardens. There are numerous footpaths, many adjacent to the breathtaking Tweed where you may see salmon, cormorants, seals, herons and Bewick Swans. If you are patient, you may also see hares and deer. Highland cattle, ponies and sheep also live at Paxton.
Within it's walls you will find one of the most magnificent collections of original Chippendale furniture in Britain alongside the largest collection of publicly owned art exhibited outside of the National Galleries of Scotland.
There are lots of things for you to see and do at Paxton House. For those who are interested you can see if you can spot Paxton Ted in the House. For older children there is an activity guide to keep you amused in the House.
Minibeast Safari: Tracking minibeasts in the wild using pooters and magnifying jars. Use of keys to identify minibeasts. Further study can take place back in the activity room.
Pond Dipping: Using nets and trays and keys pupils identify and study the mini creatures living in our pond. The adaptations of amphibians and water creatures are investigated.
Investigating Habitats: Pupils investigate the features of woodland, grassland and water environments. The homes, adaptations and conservation issues of a host of native creatures including badgers, red squirrels and bats are considered. .
