Galleries Of Justice Overnight Ghost Hunt: The Galleries of Justice in Nottingham is a ghost hunters haven. From its gruesome history, to its pitch black underground caves, this really is a must see for sceptics and believers alike.
History
The first documented case of it being used as a court was in 1375, but it could be possible it was used before then. The first documented record of it being used as a prison is from 1449 but again quite possible it was used before hand such as long at there has been a court here. There was documentation in the early 17th century relating to the building and the
need for it to be rebuilt, but talks went on for decades and nothing was done until 1724 when one of the courtroom floors collapsed and a shocked judge looked on solicitors, jury, public and accused went crashing into the cellars.
It was rebuilt in 1770 and this is what stands today. It houses two court rooms offices, underground gaol, and 2 execution sites, in the exercise yard and on the front steps for the public to see. It lay empty from 1878-1995 when the Victorians closed the gaol for its appalling conditions. The Shire Hall, still continued to house the Nottingham criminal and civil courts until 1985 when a new building was built by the canal. There is a cliff top that drops about 70 feet from the back of it, making it a prime location for people to stay contained without no escape. There was either two options, be exiled to Australia, or to executed. One man was exiled to Australia for
stealing a wallet with nothing in it, was worth a sixpence.
Famous cases
John Shipley, aged 21 sentenced to death for stealing a sheep to feed his family.
William Saville aged 29, murdered his wife and 3 children by slitting their throats on a family walk in Colwick Wood on the 21st of may 1844. He had no remorse, an hour later he was sat at home tucking in to his eggs and bacon. It was then on the 8th of august, he was deservedly hung on the steps of the shire hall. Once he was hung chaos ensued. A rush of people trying to get close to the execution site and some trying to get away blocked the narrow street.12 people was killed that day, trampled to death in the crowds that wanted to see this morbid way of entertainment.
Paranormal activity
The galleries claims to be one of the most haunted locations in the UK. White mists in the women's prison Footsteps in the cave on command, screams in the psychiatric section ( experienced by prestige paranormal) cold spots, red lights ,rolling of marbles in an experiment have all been experienced here.
The court room is notorious for the appearance of black figures on the balcony, accompanied by blood-curdling groans and screams. It's thought that this is a replay of the days in which so many death sentences
were passed in here. It has had the full works in paranormal phanomena. The
condemned mans cell is particularly frightening, feelings of being not alone and being touched are commonplace.
From the untouched courtrooms, and holding cells , the galleries are without a doubt in our opinion, one of the most frightening locations you could ever hope to find yourself in. What will you be sentenced to in Nottingham's first courthouse?
Your event will include
* An overnight investigation with the Prestige Paranormal investigation team
* Vigils, Sances and experiments
* Brief demonstration on the use of the scientific equipment
* Use of the equipment during vigils throughout the night
* Refreshments and snacks all included
* A short session at the end to discuss any paranormal activity
