The Workhouse

The Workhouse, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG250PT

The Workhouse: "From a building that nobody wanted to enter, we want to create a heritage facility that anyone would want to visit and where everyone is welcome. "

The often overlooked lives of the poor and destitute in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is explored at The Workhouse, Southwell in Nottinghamshire.

The Workhouse survives as the least altered example of its kind in existence today. Visitors can explore the segregated rooms and stairways as well as the master's quarters to discover the thought-provoking story of the 'welfare' system, created by the New Poor Law of 1834. The audio guide, based on archive records, brings the 19th-century inhabitants back to life in the empty rooms. Interactive displays address the issue of poverty through the years and across the country, while children's games illuminate the life of people who once inhabited the Workhouse.

Programme of events, inc. Changing arts and social issues exhibitions. Every month: 1st Sun Rag doll-making workshops; 3rd Sun Living History day. Tel. For details. .
