Nathan Improv Local: Bristol presents
Bristol: Game of the Scene Weekend Intensive (Improv Comedy course)
Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June, 11am - 5pm
Easton Community Centre, Kilburn Street, Bristol BS5 6AW
This weekend intensive Improv & Performance course will improve improv skills to create scenes on stage. The course begins by developing students with a deeper understanding of comedy in scenic improv and reaching an effortlessly funny scene. First, students focus not trying and reterming funny to fun. Next the students will practice using 'Game of the Scene' in one clear method. Students will be working on improvising 'sketch-like' scenes.
This course is a raucous and delight of fun, as our improv revels in this. We look at our comedic voice and how this impacts the collaborative fun. Looking at the elements of Game of the Scene that assist us with being focused on what is making the scene worthy of watching, funny and how to extrapolate the scene further and into a long-form production.
I, Nathan Keates, have been teaching improv comedy since 2006 and taught all ages and abilities. I am a qualified teacher and have taught performing arts in colleges. I am a professional international improv teacher that performs and teaches anywhere. I also began a youth improv group (11 year olds to 16 year old, they are older now) in Cardiff, Wales and they toured to various places in the UK and were invited to a teen festival in France. Let’s find the funny together.
Performance makes students aware of what is fun and where the scene is going. Focus is then given to the beats of a scene, developing the game of the scene and performing a Krompf*. We explore the tools behind comedic scenes with the aim of collaborative creation. Ultimately, the students will practice creating full scenes inside a show format and applying the techniques of the form and expanding their individuals' approach. The participants will be able to generate comedic ideas through using premise ideas and exploring organic initiations too.
