John Wesleys Chapel: John Wesley built the chapel when he started preaching outdoors to the poor of Bristol. It can be seen today just as it was in the 18th Century. Above the chapel, you can visit the rooms where John Wesley stayed. His brother, the great hymn writer Charles Wesley also stayed there as did many visiting preachers.
This historic building relies on the support of visitors to remain open as a place of prayer and worship, to be kept in good repair and to operate as a centre where people can learn about John Wesley and the origins of Methodism.
The lower part of the double-decker pulpit was used for Bible readings and leading worship. The upper part for preaching. The pulpit was designed so the preacher could escape if he was attacked by a mob - early Methodist preachers were often set upon.
Preachers could observe the services below from the lantern window - it is said that John Wesley would use it when training preachers, because he could watch both the preacher and the reaction of the congregation. .
