In association with the Imperial War Museum and as part of a nationwide programme of events commemorating the centenary of WW1
He was beset by bouts of mental illness before and, more permanently, after the war. During the war he served as a signaller and later as a machine gunner. Remarkably he wrote poems and composed songs at the front, presumably whilst sitting on a sandbag in atrench. His final years were spent in confinement; he died of tuberculosis at the age of 47, leaving behind a significant body of both music and poetry, much of it unpublished at his death.
