In association with the Imperial War Museum and as part of a nationwide programme of events commemorating the centenary of WW1
Vaughan Williams was a huge creative andcompassionate influence on the history of 20th
century English music. In 1914 he volunteered to
serve in the Field Ambulance Service in Flanders
during which time he was deeply affected by the
carnage and the loss of close friends such as
Butterworth. He survived the war and had a long and extensive career composing for nearly every musical genre. He never spoke of his experiences or sought title and honours, but no doubt he relished the banning of his music by the Nazis in 1939 because of his work for refugees.
