This workshop will explore different techniques with which a group of performers can vocally create and embody a chorus.
How does a chorus encompasses distinct characters within it, while also having a shared identity of their own?Led by Emily Louizou, the workshop will use as a starting point a classical story/myth as a stimulus for the group to work on ways of ‘adapting’ it for the stage. We will discuss structure, form, tone, style, characters, as well as the ways with which one turns narrative into effective dialogue/monologues. We will explore how to breathe new life into old stories, re-evaluating gender, class struggles and context, urging performers and creators to explore new ways of unlocking a classic text.
This is a workshop addressed to professional performers, students, and non-performers (writers/dramaturgs/directors) who are interested in exploring ways of ‘translating’ text to a theatrical form.
This event is part of Psychonaut Series: a new initiative produced by Psychonaut Theatre, aimed at promoting international, multidisciplinary performance practices.
Artist biography:
Emily Louizou is a theatre and opera director, originally from Athens, Greece but London-based over the past ten years. She trained on the MFA Theatre Directing program at Birkbeck, University of London. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor's Degree in English Literature at University College London (UCL).
She is the founder and Artistic Director of Collide, a migrant and female-led theatre company based in London. Since its inception in 2015, Collide has collaborated with more than 50 international artists coming from all disciplines. Collide has created 9 dance-theatre productions, ranging from site-specific promenade performances to black box theatre shows. Their mission is to experiment with non-traditional forms (adapting poems, myths, stories, and novels), blending text with movement and music. Collide’s new production, directed and adapted by Emily, will open in June 2024 at the Arcola Theatre.
Emily also works as a director in Greece, her latest production an adaptation of Aeschylus’ Eumenides at the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus in July 2023. She has also directed productions in drama schools across London, including at East15, Rose Bruford, Arts Ed and UAL. In addition to her directing work, Emily has worked as a resident assistant director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and at HOME in Manchester.
