Wroxeter Roman City

Wroxeter Roman City: Wroxeter was the fourth largest city in Roman Britain. Much of the site where it stood has escaped subsequent development and so it can provide extensive information about what the city was like.

Originally a legionary fortress, it later developed into a thriving civillian city populated by retired soldiers and traders. Today, the most impressive features are the second-century municipal baths and the remains of the huge wall dividing them from the exercise hall, right in the city's heart. All around were the roads, houses and trading stalls of the settlement. The new site museum helps to explain how the city worked and gives an insight into the lives of those who lived there. It includes artefacts from the site.

Access to site: As entrance to museum and shop is up a step, wheelchair users can use alternative gateway on to site. Site mostly accessible, except some areas within walls, via smooth grass, cobbles and loose and impacted gravel paths. Some slopes and bumpy areas; strong pusher for wheelchairs recommended. Secondary viewing platform has level access. .
