The killers live just down the road, and have been in power ever since the genocide. The family's youngest son, born after the genocide, asks how he can raise his children in a society where survivors are terrorized into silence, and everybody is terrorized into treating the murderers as heroes.
Rationale
Unsettling Remembering and Social Cohesion in Transnational Europe (UNREST) is a three-year EU-funded research project, bringing together researchers from the UK, Denmark, Germany, Poland and Spain to investigate the different ways in which conflict is remembered in Europe today. This screening of Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence will be introduced by researchers from the project, which will be launched at this event, and will be followed by a discussion of Oppenheimer’s film in relation to the key questions addressed by this new research, led by Professor Anna Bull of the University of Bath and Professor Hans Lauge Hansen of the University of Aarhus. This event is sponsored by the History and Memory Research Group in the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies at the University of Bath.
