Find out how, or indeed if, the mathematics adds up within the fantastical structuring of the books and the film, and see how some of the amazing special effects were created. Clips from Lord of the Rings will be used to illustrate the presentation.Professor Chris Budd is a British mathematician known especially for his contribution to non-linear differential equations and their applications in industry. He is one of the founders of Bath Taps into Science, a major hands-on science festival which has won several national prizes in the 14 years it has been running.
The discussion will be joined by our film programmer Nick Cunningham, a publisher and journalist specialising in the European film trade. He publishes the daily newspapers at the world-renowned international festivals of IDFA (International Doc Fest Amsterdam) and Rotterdam, and writes regularly about both the international documentary trade and Dutch film production. He has been a Lord of the Rings nut since first reading it at the age of 16.
