Conservation Day

Puxton Park, Monday, 13 February 2012

13 FEB

Conservation Day: CHILDREN from across the region are being urged to support the environment by attending a Conservation Day at Puxton Park, near Weston-super-Mare.

The popular adventure park in Hewish is keen on conservation having planted more than 4,000 trees within the grounds last year.

Puxton managing director Alistair Mead is keen to continue this trend in 2012 by hosting its first Conservation day of the year on February 13.

The day is part of a host of entertainment planned for the half term week and will involve children meeting farmer Mark Slade to plant various native trees, shrubs and bulbs.

Youngsters will also be given their own pots to plant seeds and take home with them at the end of the day.

Mr Mead said: It is great to get children involved in conservation and what better way than to plant their own trees and watch them grow over the years.

We want to put back into the community what people have taken away and began our efforts four years ago by planting trees in the car park and they are coming up well.

Last year we planted 4,000 trees and shrubs and we want to do the same again this year.

Our goal is to get the whole site, which is very flat, full of trees in order to attract more wildlife to Puxton Park.

Our previous conservation days have proved a hit in the past and we hope that parents will bring their children along to support our efforts in 2012.

The conservation theme will continue later in the week with a Bird Box day where youngsters can build their own bird boxes with Falconer Gary Lawrence on February 18.

Puxton Park will also be staging its first educational visits for schools at the end of January and is keen to hear from other schools interested in signing up.

Set in the beautiful Somerset countryside the 70-acre family park is one of the largest visitor attractions in the region offering a pet village, farm animals and a falconry centre.

For play there is an indoor three-storey play barn, outdoor play with an inflatable bouncy pillow, giant castle, maze, adventure course, boating lake, and JCB sand pit.

There is also the award winning Meadow's restaurant and a farm shop selling local produce including Somerset grown vegetables, strawberries from Cheddar, local cheeses and meats from award winning Gerald David Butchers.
