Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum: Samuel Johnson, one of the most famous figures of the 18th century, was born in the city on the 18th September 1709. His house in Breadmarket Street facing the market square, is now a museum to his life, work and personality.
The house has been a museum since 1901 - one of the earliest personal museums in the country. There is a bookshop on the ground floor, and two tableaux rooms give an impression of what the house was like in the early years of the 18th century.
The museum is strong on objects relating to Elizabeth, Johnsons wife, and there are two libraries which specialise in Johnsonian and 18th century literature.
The house is open daily throughout the year (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day).
