Army Medical Services Museum

Army Medical Services Museum: The museum is located in the Defence Medical Services Training Centre, Keogh Barracks, on Mytchett Place Road, Mytchett in Surrey. The collections on display include uniforms & insignia, medical, dental and veterinary equipment, ambulances, an ambulance train ward coach, a carriage used by Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War and a large medal collection including twenty three of the 29 Victoria Crosses awarded to the Army Medical Services.

The Royal Army Medical Corps was formed by Royal Warrant on 23rd June 1898. Prior to that date medical organisation within the British Army can trace its formal origins back to 1660 and the formation of the Standing Regular Army. Each regiment of infantry and cavalry had a Regimental Surgeon and his assistant, eventually titled the Assistant Surgeon.

The museum is able to assist you in researching the history of the Army Medical Services. Dependant on the amount of work involved this research may attract a charge and in the case of extensive photocopying there will be a charge per page. .
